Questions
Frequently asked questions
Prices and rates
Is Marge’s hourly rate the rate I should charge?
It’s the minimum you need with the figures you entered. What the market pays may be higher. If it’s lower than what Marge works out, you’re working at a loss or keeping less than you want.
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Markup is your profit as a share of your cost price, margin as a share of your selling price. A 30% markup is a 23% margin. In the Price per product calculator you see them side by side.
How much of my time is not billable?
That varies a lot. Someone who stays on one site for a long time has less paperwork than someone who does lots of small jobs. A quarter is a reasonable starting point. Keep track for a few weeks of where your hours go, and then you’ll know.
Should I round my hourly rate?
On your price list, it’s best to round up. Marge shows the rounded amount next to the exact one.
Contributions, taxes and VAT
Are the percentages for social security contributions and taxes correct?
They’re estimates to start with, not official figures. They depend on your income, your status, your municipality and your deductions. Your accountant or your social insurance fund can give you the right ones.
Why is the VAT shown separately?
Because VAT isn’t income. Your customer pays it, you pass it on. That’s why Marge works everything out excluding VAT and only adds the VAT at the end.
What does the exemption scheme change?
Then you don’t charge VAT to your customers, and you can’t reclaim the VAT on your purchases. Tick it in the calculator and the VAT disappears from the result. Whether you fall under it, check with your accountant.
About Marge
Where are my figures kept?
Only in your own browser, on this device. There is no account and nothing goes to a server. With ‘Forget everything on this device’ you delete it all.
How do I share a calculation with my accountant?
With ‘Copy link’ your figures are inside the link itself. Or choose ‘Copy as text’ and paste the tally roll into an email. Printing works too.
Does Marge cost anything?
The calculators are free, with no account and no ads. Marge is an app by nealvdv from the Bureel family.
